Good night, sweet prince...

... and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!

UPDATE: It's 5:18 AM, 1-07-09, and I turned on my 360. Oddly it didn't RROD. I'm sure if I use it again for a bit it will die again, but at least there is a glimmer of hope. I will have to open it up tomorrow and make further faux-engineering adjustments. /UPDATE

What a shame. My XBOX 360 has been afflicted by the dreaded RROD and is, thus, dead.

Before any of this happened, a few months ago (let's say late September) I opened it up when my curiosity got the best of me and did a bunch of stuff to its innards, treating it like a PC. I figured, why not? I wanted to see what was inside. Anyway, soon after that it got the RROD for the first time, sometime 'round late November/early December, and I was slightly bummed, but not as much as I probably should be, considering. I took it upon myself to "fix" it since the Microsoft warranty for it was voided as soon as I opened it, and a few hours later I got it working.

Now, though, another month or so since then, it has come up again and the previous fix (if it even did fix anything) that I performed on it did not work.

Ah well, it was good while it lasted. Perhaps it's a sign that I should stop playing games. I don't do it often enough, anyway. Maybe I'll get one again in the future, if only so I can keep playing Rock Band. But consider this a goodbye to my childhood!

Games are too expensive, anyway.

My 360. And Spider-Man, noticeably upset.

Quickies
- I'm too lazy to continue the "notable movies of 2008" bit right now. I will say that the #3, #4, and #5 picks would've been Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (not good), Kung Fu Panda (great), and Pineapple Express (good). Hey, maybe I don't need to go into all that detail anymore, since I just did three movies in one post. It's a shame Eagle Eye got a dedicated post and Kung Fu Panda gets shafted, though...

- I took that photo of my 360 and Spider-Man with the Canon Powershot SD1100 IS. My sister got it for me for Christmas. I think I shouted "Holy shit!" when I opened it. The review I linked to says it's a "camera you buy your mom", but it works great for a digicam noob like me, so perhaps it's an accurate description. Needless to say, it's an awesome gift.

- R.I.P. EGM. I stopped reading it a long time ago, but the magazine did introduce me to 1up.com, which always seemed to have something... different that made it special among video game websites. While 1up.com is not dying, EGM has, and it took a bit of my childhood with it. I wonder if God made my 360 die the same time EGM died to officially commemorate the death of my childhood. Damn you, Kami-sama! To EGM, I say also... Good night, sweet prince.

- I just recently picked up and started watching the Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV series, and I've gotta say, I'm impressed. I wasn't a big fan of the 1995 movie but these, these are in a class of their own. The animation is good, the plot is deep and thought-provoking, and there's just something to be said about an anime that makes you sympathize with and care about machines, specifically the Tachikoma. In fact, one of the themes of GITS is to make you question your own humanity in a heavily-digital world (there are lots of cyborgs and machines whose AI grow, with some beginning to "think" for themselves). It's all very well done. I haven't finished it quite yet, about halfway through the second season (GITS:SAC 2nd Gig), but I've been pretty much pleased with all the episodes I've seen. If you're at all interested in the cyberpunk genre or even The Matrix movies (a series that was greatly influenced by GITS), I highly recommend them.

- School starts next week. Hurray?

- And since I haven't said anything about it yet, Hurray for 2009! Happy New Year! 2008 definitely went by too fast, but I guess that's 'cause I've been having too much fun. Here's to a similarly awesome new year!
