In brief, the plot is set in Japan some time during the Ming dynasty. The Chinese emperor sent a group of soldiers to Japan to apprehend a little kid for the purpose of fulfilling a prophecy, one that promises eternal life. The stranger gets mixed up in it somehow, and we follow the story of him, the boy and his dog as they evade their pursuers.
Keep in mind, that is a very, very condensed version of the film which, while not particularly deep, is pretty friggin' awesome.
It's got good animation, decent enough plot, and likeable characters. I would say it's right up there with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time as one of last year's best anime movies.
Anyway, you should check it out if you're even slightly interested in anime, sword fights, animated dogs, or even stories about redemption. This is one of the better ones. And I didn't even know I liked these "escort-y" stories, but now that I know I do, I think I will check out everything else I've missed in this genre, starting with perhaps Lone Wolf and Cub and Moribito.
Quickies
- I just watched the first episode of Hajime No Ippo: The New Challenger. I like how the story picks up right where it left off 5 or so years ago and the animation, while arguably dated, still holds up pretty well. I would go so far as to say it's the Source Engine of anime.
- I woke up at 5pm today because I spent all night watching Ghost In The Shell episodes as well as random other movies that I've wanted to watch. Pretty crazy. I really need to get my sleeping patterns in check soon, though - classes start this coming Monday.
- My last Friday before school starts and I'm doing it to catch up on movies and anime. Awesome!
